State Fair and Easter

Last week Hannah's class had a "state fair" at school. This meant that everyone in the class randomly chose a state out of a hat and then had to do research on it, and come up with a travel brochure to make people want to come to the state. Hannah picked North Dakota. North Dakota? Why would anyone want to go there? At the state fair, they stood under their state poster and tried to convince visiting parents to come to their state. If they did a good job of convincing the parent could give the kid a sticker to put on their poster. The goal was for each child to get 5 stickers. At the end of the event I noticed that Hannah had ELEVEN stickers! I asked her how she got eleven people to go to North Dakota (instead of Hawaii, or Florida, California, or any other of the 49 more desireable states. She just told me that they have oil in North Dakota and she told visitors to her poster that if they came to North Dakota they would get free oil!!! Maybe the North Dakota tourism board should hire her

I also have to say that for the state fair Hannah wore Gene's plaid jacket, a hat that covered her ears and work boots. And, she still was the most beautiful girl there. Any girl can look pretty in a dress, but Hannah glows even in plaid!!

As usual, we went to Connecticut for Easter and spent Saturday morning at the country club awaiting the Easter bunny. The girls had their faces painted while they waited. Hannah went for the princess look. Sophie went for the bunny look. (Below) The face painter was very talented.

After breakfast and the facepainting and the balloon making the kids finally got to go outside to search for eggs. It was freezing but the kids went right down to business.

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about Molli Malou's bike riding on the Molli blog. We thought she'd like to see a picture of her cousin Sophie riding a two wheeler. She's REALLY riding a two wheeler. No tricks here. Nope we'd never do anything mean like lie about a developmental milestone. Anyway, Sophie was ecstatic to be riding her bike and starting and stopping herself. You can see how happy she is by her expression.
After a little bike riding we played a little softball. Gene is coaching Hannah's team this year so the girls are all decked out with Softball gear. As you can see the girls(and mom, dad, and pop-pop) had a fantastic time hitting, running and catching.

Oh yeah, and we were there for Easter. On Easter Morning, the girls had another private Easter egg hunt. You can tell that Hannah was done having her picture taken by this point in the weekend.
Sophie, on the other hand, was not done having her picture taken,

Saying Goodbye to Winter

Yesterday was our goodbye to winter. A last artic blast. We started the day at Nashoba Mountain for some tubing. The snow was definitely melting but the kids had a good time. Sophie had had a sleepover at Shannon's, so we went with her family. As you will see in the progression of pictures Sophie and Shannon peter out as the day wears on and at the end they get just plain grumpy. I have also included some pictures of a previous trip to the tubing park in February when the winter air was much more..well.......wintry (for lack of a better word).

In the afternoon we took the kids to a movie and then some neighbors stopped by and we had an impromptu game of snow baseball (we hit snow balls with bats instead of real baseballs). Unfortunately we have no pictures of this. The kids had a blast and were soaking wet by the end of the game and it all seemed like a fitting way to say goodbye to the kid's fluffy, transformable, moldable, slip slidy friend - snow.
In this picture Sophie and Shannon prepare to go down the mountain. At this point in the day they were still amenable to having their picture taken.

GOING,

GOING,

GONE! (well, almost gone)

This picture is taken from the top of the hill.
The next picture was taken from the bottom of the hill in early February. You can really see the difference in hte snow cover.

This picture was taken in early February, same place. Can you see any ground or dirt here?? Now look at the above picture.

This picture was taken of Hannah yesterday at the tube park. Notice how the jacket is stuffed in the tube and not on her. Also notice how the hat is slipping of her head. The only reason she has her mittens and snowpants on was to keep herself dry. Now a picture of Hannah in February......

Here you can see, the coat is on, there is actually a scarf, and the hat is also pulled down over her head. Her cheeks are also all rosy from the cold nipping at them!

And here's Sophie in February all bundled up.
She doesn't have her mittens on because she needs her hands to drink the hot cocoa. There was no hot cocoa yesterday!!!

And, back to yesterday. Forget the crazy guy in the picture, look at the lack of snow in the backround, evaporating before our very eyes.

As I said earlier, it didn't take long for Sophie and Shannon to lose steam. When you're seven a picnic table makes the perfect bed for two.

But never too tired to share a secret or two.
Sometimes Sophie and Shannon remind me of two kittens. When they are playful - look out. But, when they are sleepy, they are content and cuddly as they bask in the sun but don't bug them or you might see this:

Who woke us up?????

Hannah, who was not exhausted from a sleepless night gave us all a big smile. She also had some fun pestering the little girls (see below), after all, what else are big sisters for?

Sophie smiles for the camera unaware that Hannah is about to pinch her and put her in the mood two pictures up.

All in All, the whole day was a fitting farewell to our coldest season. As grownups we are always happy to put away the shovels and the big bulky winter coats away but for the young it is also putting away igloos, sledding hills, snowball fights, forts, and, of course, hot cocoa, and December and the promise of another snow day, is such a long way off! (Thank God!)

Father Daughter Square Dance

Tonight Gene and Sophie went to a Brownie sponsored Square Dance. Sophie requested that I go to Walmart today and buy her a cowboy hat. I dutifully complied. While I was there I noticed they had some very inexpensive square dance-ish clothes. So, for $20.,(I'm not kidding, you have got to love Wal-mart) I got her this whole ensemble! And, I think she'll actually wear it again!
I also bought Gene a hat which he was kind of mortified to wear but did it for his darling daughter.
Anyway, it all made for a great photo op!
Enjoy!

Sophie is all ready for the square dance and poses for me while she waits for her dad to be ready. She makes quite the cowgirl for a little Jewish, Korean girl, n'est pas?

All ready to square dance!

Destination Imagination Tournament

This past weekend was Hannah and Sophie's Destination Imagination tournament.
It was in West Springfield, MA and we braved some very bad weather to get there.
The kids had a great day. Hannah's team won first place and will go to the State meet in Worcester on March 31. Sophie's team won the DaVinci award for outstanding creativity.
Everyone is very happy at our house at the moment. Enjoy the pictures!

Hannah and her team prepare to perform.
Notice the fine, fine mirror in the background.
Hannah and her team introduce themselves before they perform

Secretary Smart and the dumb detective duo
sit in the police car and go to the "museum"

Hannah smiles as she performs her "Secretary Smart" role.
Sophie's teammates help her put on her make-up for her performance. Have you ever seen anyone so happy to have a green face????

Sophie and her teammates "fork: and "spoon" in full swing.

Sophie was dressed as a table for her skit. She is also wearing a green wig and flowers on her head because her head is the centerpiece

DI tournament

Sophie at the DI tournament.
She got to paint her face green and
eat candy that turned her tounge blue.
Does life get any better?

Our devil and witch casting spells, (Note: the "trick or treaters" behind them are actually their old costumes stuffed with newspaper) Posted by Picasa

Halloween 2006

Hannah and Sophie were our devil and witch this year. The two costumes in back were their old halloween costumes stuffed with newspaper to "look" like trick or treaters. We fooled quite a few people. Hannah is old enough now that the costumes in her size range come complete with a plunging neckline. Grrrrr! We made her wear tights and crocs so no one would mistake her for anything but the little girl that she is! Posted by Picasa
