Melancholy Baby

No picture today, just a little sort of sad but sweet story. This afternoon Sophie was sitting in the TV room listening to her Discman while I was in my bedroom catching up on some e-mail.
She was so quiet that I went in to check on her. She was sitting on the couch, with her discman on, with tears just streaming down her face. She was dabbing her tears with a pitiful looking tissue. Before I could say anything I could hear that she was listening to "Walking on Sunshine", the song from Greg and Trine's wedding. She looked at me and said in the most pathetic voice "I need to see Uncle and Trine". I almost started crying too (if fact my eyes are getting a little moist as I type this.) I asked her if she wanted to call them, and she said "no, I need to see them." I have to say if I was a rich woman, looking at this child's sad face we would have been on our way to Logan. Gene and Hannah would have had to cope. Anyway, she then said that she wanted to watch their wedding video and so I put her on my lap and we both watched the video and it was a good thing the tissue box was next to us. You know, for the allergies.

Chef Sophie

Watching Sophie eat lunch is never a boring experience and it actually gets more interesting as she gets older. I should have known something was up when she made it quite clear at a very early age that she did not like Peanut Butter and Jelly and a glass of milk like 99.9% of her peers (excluding those with Peanut and Milk allergies - which seems to be a lot). Sophie has never liked sandwiches and has a result has spent most of her young life eating leftovers. But within the last couple of months she has become the fusion cuisine queen. A couple of weeks ago she was happily dipping her peach slices into her clam chowder. I have to admit I refused to try it but she thought it was quite delicious. She also has put goldfish (the snack kind not the fish kind) on top of pizza in lieu of pepperoni or something more traditional. The other day she was having a fairly normal lunch of chicken soup and a glass of milk. Maybe for any other kid it would be traditional but Sophie had to put a spin on it. She went and got two straws from the cabinet and put one straw in her soup and another in her milk and started drinking them both simultaneously. She liked it so much she drank until they were both gone. Thus the picture on todays blog.

Today she took it one step further and dumped her milk into her chicken soup and said "oh, that's how you do it!" "Do what?" I asked. "Make Clam chowder!" she exclaimed excitedly. I was confused since she had combined milk and chicken soup so I looked in the bowl, and indeed, instead of the creamy yellow color I was expecting to see, the liquid was almost greyish in color, much more like a chowder. "What do you know?" I said. "You did make clam chowder". She smiled and ate while I looked on in total wonder.

But, the story doesn't end there. She then took her straw and drank all the liquid out of the bowl. When the liquid was gone she started stuffing a noodle up the straw to try and drink that too. I was looking on in total awe. The noodle was too long for the power of her suck so her plan wasn't working. Then I noticed her bending the straw like she was trying to break the straw and so I said "You can't break the straw like that." She looked at me like I was the stupidest person on earth and said "I'm not trying to break the straw!" And with that she bent the straw again and the NOODLE broke in half, letting the bottom half slip out of the straw and Sophie easily sucked up the top half. Amazing!

Not a day goes by when these kids don't amaze me!

A New Routine

Everything seems to be becoming routine now. The girls get up in the morning, sit lifelessly in front of the TV for a while, at a certain point they realize they are awake and hungry and start complaining that they are "starving to death" waiting for breakfast. After feeding time (sometimes the house feels like a zoo), they are supposed to get dressed. This is usually the time when child #1 starts yelling at me because the outfit she wants to wear "isn't clean", or "doesn't fit", or "can't be found". Somehow all of these things are directly my fault and I am a bad person for there occurrence. Meanwhile, child #2 is laying as a lifeless lump on the floor apparently waiting for her nursemaid to dress her. When it is suggested to her that she really should get dressed she flips her body onto the opposite side it had been on, and continues to play dead. Eventually with much prodding (a cattle brand would come in handy), she goes upstairs to get dressed making sure to groan at each step to make us aware of her discontent with the situation. It is absolutely inevitable that she comes downstairs with an outfit on that is either completely inappropriate for the weather or the days activity. If it is 95 degrees she is sure to come downstairs with a wool sweater and tights (with or without a skirt). If she is supposed to be getting in school clothes she is sure to come down in a Tutu. At this point, parental intervention is necessary, but it isn't pretty. Imagine trying to put a chimpanzee on caffeine into a wet suit and you can get a vague idea of what it is like to try to get Sophie to change her outfit.
I know some of you are thinking ' They should lay the clothes out the night before' or 'They should help Sophie get dressed on the first go around. Well let me just say neither option works. We've tried.

After getting dressed we still have to do hair, pack lunches, and make sure the backpack has all the necessary items for that day. I have other things to do today so I'll spare you the details of these activities. Somehow by 8:40 we manage to get out the front door relatively unscathed. I put them on the bus and go inside to clean up the carnage.
Ahhhhh! Routine!

Kindergarten Bound

Well, Sophie got on the bus without a hitch. She really didn't seem nervous at all this morning. In fact, she was practically pushing me out the door to go wait for the bus. It clearly is a great advantage to have a big sister with you. There also must have been a lot of pollen in the air today because my eyes got kind of watery as I watched my two girls drive off into the distance.
Damn Allergies! Anyway, I'm posting some pictures of the mornings events including a picture of hannah's first day of Kindergarten for comparison sake. Enjoy!

16 hours to go

In sixteen hours both my children will board the big yellow school bus and I will have three hours to myself five days a week. I can hardly believe it. Sophie seems okay with the whole idea of course she gets to ride the bus with big sister Hannah. Hannah started school last Wednesday and seems to be doing just fine. Not a lot of information comes though.

Today Hannah's friend Nikki came over to play baseball with Hannah and Sophie. They had a great time. Sophie even managed to hit a few balls in her "tutu". Nikki and Hannah offered to walk Sophie to her Kindergarden classroom tomorrow after they got off the bus. Sophie said "No way! I know the way" I can just imagine the scene tomorrow as overly helpful Hannah and Nikki try to help a very stubborn Sophie to her room. It might be my first call from the Principal!
